Frequently Asked Questions about planning yours or a loved one’s funeral ahead of time.
Planning for one’s own or a loved one’s funeral can be a daunting yet profoundly important task. Whether prompted by a desire to alleviate future burdens on family members, ensure personal wishes are honored, or simply to make financial arrangements in advance, funeral preplanning offers a way to approach a sensitive topic with foresight and care. By taking proactive steps to outline preferences and logistical details now, individuals can not only gain peace of mind but also provide a clear roadmap for their loved ones during a challenging time.
1. Why You Should Consider Preplanned Funerals
First off, it’s a very easy thing to do. It can take as little as an hour to put together a plan. All you need to do is set up a meeting with one of our qualified funeral directors and they will guide you through all the details
2. You’re In Charge of Your Final Wishes
When a loved one passes, emotions run high, and oftentimes people make decisions based on what they THINK their loved one would want. This often leads to spending more money than what they would have wanted. By planning in advance, you make all the personal decisions ahead of time, unburdening your loved ones from having to figure things out when they could very well be overcome by grief.
You don’t need to do it alone. Involving your family in the planning process can be meaningful, fostering a sense of connection and understanding. It reassures them your arrangements reflect your true vision, providing comfort and clarity during a difficult time.
Even if you make all the plans yourself, it’s important to discuss with key family members all of your decisions and wishes so there are no misunderstandings in the future.
3. You Control the Budget
Like any other purchase, funeral service prices can vary widely, from economical to extravagant. By preplanning, you take control of these decisions yourself. Start by setting a budget you’re comfortable with, then explore all available options. Consider the costs of burial plots, caskets or urns, transportation, flowers and any additional services or items you may want. Being realistic about your financial situation is crucial, ensuring that the choices you make align with your budget and provide the desired level of service without unnecessary financial strain.
4. You Remove the Burden From Your Family and Friends
When a loved one passes away, families are often overwhelmed with a multitude of tasks and decisions amidst their grief and emotional turmoil. By arranging your funeral in advance, you alleviate this burden, allowing them to devote their time and energy to healing and remembrance. Preplanning spares your loved ones from the stress of wondering if they are making the right choices. Instead, they can focus on what truly matters: saying goodbye and celebrating your life with those who cared about you most.
5. Get All Your Questions Answered to Your Satisfaction
There are so many questions to consider. It’s only when you sit down with a funeral director that you begin to realize the full scope of what needs to be addressed. Plus, you’ll likely have many questions of your own. Rest assured, each one will be answered, helping you to make informed and well-thought-out decisions.
6. Make Decisions When You’re in the Best Frame of Mind
The best time to make decisions is when you have a healthy body and mind. Preplanning your funeral allows you to gather information and explore your options thoroughly without rushing. You’ll gain a clear understanding of everything involved in funeral planning without the pressure of making decisions during a stressful time.
7. Consider Wisconsin Burial Insurance and Burial Trusts
Wisconsin is considered a 100% burial trust/insurance state, meaning that 100% of the funds you pay toward your funeral, legally have to be placed in a trust fund, CD, insurance policy or other investment option, to protect your assets. That way, you’re assured the funds will be there to cover any and all expenses when needed.
There are a number of government supported programs and many private options available to you, such as preneed insurance. Meeting with one of our directors beforehand can help clarify them all. Our directors will guide you through these choices, ensuring you fully understand each option. You can also consult with your attorney to explain all your options and to set up funds.

8. What if the Funeral Home Closes or I Want To Change Funeral Homes?
As detailed in #7 above, since Wisconsin is a 100% state, your funds are protected even if the funeral home you choose goes out of business. In such an event, transferring your funds to a new funeral home is a straightforward process, and the new provider will strive to honor your original plan as closely as possible.
If you wish to change funeral homes before your passing, simply contact the original funeral home to request your file. Should you encounter any difficulties, representatives from your new funeral home can assist in obtaining the funds on your behalf.

9. Designating Authorization for Final Disposition
This isn’t always needed but in some instances when there may be conflicting opinions by family members, it’s an important option to think about to avoid conflict later. By designating an individual as having authorization for final disposition of your remains and your funeral plans, you can assure that your wishes will be carried out exactly to your specifications, despite any objections. If you’re located in the state of Wisconsin, please visit the Department of Health Services instruction document and reach out to one of our funeral directors for guidance when considering this option.
Preplanning your own or a loved one’s funeral is a thoughtful and responsible way to ensure that final wishes are honored and that your family is spared from making difficult decisions during an emotionally trying time. By taking charge of the details, you can create a meaningful farewell that reflects your values and preferences, while also managing costs and avoiding financial strain.
Involving your family in the process can strengthen bonds and provide clarity, offering them peace of mind and allowing them to focus on healing and remembrance. With the guidance of experienced funeral directors and the protection of your funds guaranteed, you can confidently plan for the future, knowing your arrangements will be handled with care and respect.
