Gedas Grinis, M.D., age 68, passed away on Friday, April 11, 2025, in Somers, Wisconsin. A devoted husband, proud father, compassionate physician, and avid sportsman, Gedas lived a life marked by dedication to his family, profession, and passions.
Born on August 30, 1956, in Fort Lee, Virginia, Gedas pursued a path of academic and professional excellence. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Loyola University Chicago in 1978 and went on to receive his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1983. Following medical school, he completed a residency in urology at the University of Illinois Chicago.
Gedas began his medical career at the Hutchinson Clinic in Hutchinson, Kansas. In 1998, he played a pivotal role in establishing the urology department at the newly opened Aurora Hospital and Clinic in Kenosha, Wisconsin—a testament to his leadership and commitment to advancing patient care. He concluded his distinguished career at Mercy Hospital in Walworth, Wisconsin, retiring in 2021 after decades of service to his community and patients, who knew him for his humor and easy bedside manner.
Beyond medicine, Gedas was a man of vibrant interests and unwavering enthusiasm for life. A lifelong fan of Chicago sports teams—the White Sox, Blackhawks, and Bears—he followed each season with passion. He found joy on the slopes skiing in destinations as varied as the Dolomites, Aspen, and Wilmot. Summers were often spent enjoying water sports or playing senior men’s league baseball—activities that reflected both his athletic spirit and love for camaraderie.
Gedas shared 35 cherished years of marriage with his wife, Anita. Together they raised two daughters: Annamaria Berenz (Joseph) and Cecilia Fredel (Noah), who brought immense pride and joy into their lives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Gedas Grinis M.D., and mother Aldona Grinis.
May the memory of Dr. Gedas Grinis bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all whose lives he touched.
A private Mass and interment will be held in St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery in Chicago to honor Gedas’ life and legacy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials made to the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center in Gedas’ name are welcome. Link to donate here: https://give.wiscmedicine.org/give/443075/#!/donation/checkout.

abril 25, 2025Deepest sympathies to the family of Dr. Grinis. I had the pleasure of working with him for 5 years at Holy Family Memorial hospital in Manitowoc, WI and he was the life of the department! He was always extremely kind and would take however much time was needed for his patients. He was greatly appreciative of all of the staff and personally thanked each one of us at the end of every day. He was well loved by patients too and he had quite the following with patients coming from all corners of Wisconsin to see him. We were the lucky recipients of delicious Kringle on a regular basis. I am greatly saddened to hear the news and would like the family to know that he was one of the "greats".
